Word Verification

I am joining Lee (amongst others) in turning off Word Verification on the "comments" form. I know it's supposedly there to stop spam, but it is a source of irritation.
(If I now get flooded with spam I shall curse Lee and turn it back on)

You're a good man. Blame me, if it all goes belly up, by all means.

I have five active blogs and three inactive. None of them gets serious spam. Occasionally, very occasionally, I get a comment with a link in it to something dodgy. The funny thing is it is usually on an old post (because they search by topic, not recency) so no readers ever see it and, if I can be bothered, I just delete it.

My experience has been the same as Lee's, even down to the once-in-a-blue-moon comment at an old post. Aside from the fancy that a fine update to Jabberwocky might emerge from the "words" that the captcha thingy generates...

Granny:
Loved the reference to Jabberwocky!

Word verification used to be a pain but about two months ago Blogger started generating pronounceable combinations. Occasionally there was joky mileage to be gained from some of these and I, for one, am never able to turn down anything that stimulates my gradually subsiding brain.

It is a tad annoying isn't it? I'm a bit on the dyslexic side so can never write the right combination of letters for the first seven attempts.

I would turn mine off but it is quite fun to annoy other fellow word muddled minds!

Hope you are keeping well, Gandalf :)

x V.

OK.

Is Valonia the only one who calls you Gandalf, or are there others? I think Gandalf was older, but I like the association.

It's because Avus is so wise... Nothing to do with age. Honest!

I bet you say that to all the boys, Valonia!

Actually I rather like it and it is somehow appropriate since I read the whole of the Lord of The Rings, chapter by chapter, to my children as an ongoing bedtime story, adopting characters' voices as we went along.

My daughter still refuses to see the LOTR film as she does not want to destroy her images, formed whilst listening to the story. (and the first time she heard my telephone answering machine message she said she was back being read to by me)

No, only to you!

I'm glad you're not offended by it as it is meant in the fondest of ways.

It sounds a lovely way to have brought up your children. My brother and I were not allowed to buy books when we were young. My mother had to borrow them from a neighbour to read to us.

Will you and Mrs. Avus adopt me? I'm house trained. Well, nearly.

Valonia:
So sorry you were not allowed books in childhood - I cannot imagine a childhood without them. (although, these days, children seem not to want them.) Luckily I have 2/6 grandchildren who are absolute bookworms - the others just want electronic games to play on their mobile phones. Seems so sterile to me - no mind images to cherish.

As to adoption. As you are reasonably housetrained you can join Sabre, the German Shepherd in the household. That's if you can put up with Steeleye Span, Fairport and Morris Music (or do you want to escape from the last?)

Books turned my childhood into one long fairy tale. Pocket money went on books..... and still does. I wonder if Valonia has turned into a bookworm to make up for lost time. I have to agree with Valonia about Gandalf...the wise :-)

My mom felt we should get our books from the library, until, that is, the library got a new librarian who go rid of one of mom's favorite books. We did have some of our own, but most of our favorites were at the library. Now that I have a house full of too many things, I can appreciate Mom's original point of view.

I am indeed a book worm now. I have more books than space to keep them so my father is currently custodian of them!

Will Sabre mind sharing?

I have never had it, and never really needed it, but then my blog has never been all that active....so maybe that is why. I am captcha challenged, so I am glad to not have to do that....I have often had to type those letter three and four times to get something to post.
